Gambling can be a lucrative pastime but it can also be addictive. It’s important to follow some rules to stay out of trouble.

The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, which would have prohibited online gambling to citizens of the United States, was introduced in 1999 as a bill in the US Senate. It was later declared unconstitutional.

Several similar bills have been introduced in the House since 2007. HR 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, was introduced in April 2007. It would require internet gambling facilities to be licensed by the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The bill is supported by House Speaker John Boehner and Rep. Barney Frank.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was passed in 2010, charges Internet poker operators with money laundering and bank fraud. The owners of three of the largest online poker sites are charged in the case. The owner of Seals with Clubs argued that cryptocurrencies are social gambling. The owner was convicted and sentenced to two years probation and was fined $25,000 for violating the UIGEA.

There are also other federal criminal statutes implicated in the illegal gambling industry. The Wire Act and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act have been interpreted to include all forms of Internet gambling. In addition, several state officials have expressed concerns that online gambling can be used to bring illegal gambling into their jurisdictions.
